How to Decorate Your Front Porch + Entryway for Fall

September 22, 2020

If you’ve been around here for any amount of time then you know I LOVE decorating for fall. There’s just something about the season between the extra coziness, the cooler temperatures and all the earthy colors that feels extra special. This is why I typically go all-in on decorating our front porch and entryway. It’s the first thing anyone sees when they come to our house and I want it to feel welcoming! It’s usually my most asked about space this time of year so I thought I’d share my tips/process for decorating! I also put together this post featuring items I’ve been eyeing that perfect for a cozy fall front porch. I hope it’s helpful as well as the below tips!

Define your color palette

Fall has a typical color palette so don’t overthink this one! When in doubt you can always use oranges, yellows and shades of brown. Sometimes I think it’s fun to play around with things though and add some white or even some black. Initially, I wanted to go with white mums but could only find orange and I am really happy with how things turned out but next year I definitely want to try the white at some point for something a bit different.

Basically you just want to make sure anything you want to add will make sense color-wise before putting it all together. When in doubt, stick with that earthy color palette and you’ll be set!

Bring in some patterns and texture

Y’all know I’m all about the texture. I mean, have you seen my living room? Lol. One of my favorite ways to add texture and patterns to a front porch is to layer your welcome mat. I like to take a larger woven style rug like this one with some kind of neutral pattern and then layer it with a bristle mat (you want it to be practical just incase some needs to wipe their feet!) on top. I also like to add in some lanterns like these or these to mix in a different material. This year I used this set. I layered a few rugs inside in the entryway for some extra texture inside too! Oh and don’t forget some actual pumpkins!

And of course, if you have a porch swing or couch, you have to add cozy pillows and a good throw. I’m really loving this pillow and this blanket specifically for my setup this year. Here’s a peek at what it’s looking like this year!

Less is more

I try not to go overboard in any of my spaces and keep the “less is more” mindset. For example, in our entryway, I just got in this gorgeous mirror and I’m really letting it just speak for itself. Especially if you have a statement piece, whether it’s seasonal or out all year, let it do all the talking. Maybe add a small pumpkin like this one, a candle and some faux foliage or dried pampas grass, but when in doubt, less is more!

Recycle what you have

I never want to make y’all feel like every year you have to shop, shop, shop for fall decor. I want you to invest in quality pieces that you can reuse year after year. Of course it’s fun for me to check out all the new stuff stores get in and share that with you guys, but lots of things you can put in storage once fall is over and pull out again next year. I would even recommend taking a look around your yard for branches and foliage you can put in a vase or even make your own wreath with!

I hope this was helpful and that y’all are just as excited for spring as I am! I linked as many things as possible, but let me know if you need a link!

Lovely as always! I just decorated my front step and front yard. I have to say I am a bit “outnumbered” by the 3 men in my house, meaning my husband and sons who prefer the Halloween decor! We meet in the middle and it is a lot of fun! Happy first day of Autumn!

I love the simplicity of it all! Your porch swing calls for some cuddles and a cup of coffee in the morning. Thank you for sharing your home and sweet little girl 🙂
