As someone who shares their home on the internet and has the opportunity to work with some amazing brands, I am constantly refreshing different spaces in our home. And I get questions from y’all all the time about how to go about changing things up without having to go crazy spending money or swapping everything out. Well, I’ve got some good tips and ideas for you, so be sure to save this post to Pinterest or bookmark it so you can reference it the next time you want to freshen up any space in your home!
Take inventory of what you have
Before you do anything, take a look around the room you want to refresh and make note of what you have and what you plan to do with everything. Maybe you’ll realize all you want to do is rearrange the furniture!
Decide what has to stay
Whether it’s for budget purposes, functionality, whatever, decide what has to stay in the space because it’s just not possible to replace it/update it right now. Once you know what will continue to live in the space, it becomes easier to know what you can do to change things up. For example, maybe your couch (speaking of couches, we just got a new one and I’m OBSESSED) and area rug are staying, but it’s within budget to find some new artwork for the walls or print off some family photos. As an artist, I can tell you that updating your art can completely change a space. It can bring it in more or less color, establish a vibe in a room and help ground a space because empty walls (especially white walls) can sometimes make you feel like everything is just floating.
Decide what you want to add
I kind of started in on this above, but once you know what you’re working with (the things you’re keeping), it’s time to start thinking about the items you want to add to freshen up your space. Maybe a new lamp, or coffee table books, a few new throw pillows, even a candle! Refreshing a space is all about the details! A whole room makeover is always fun and exciting but you really can completely change a room just by swapping out some of the small details.
Shop your house before you go buy more stuff
Do y’all ever shop your house?! I think it’s so fun to walk around the house to see what I already have laying around and could use to liven a space up. Sometimes even just moving a piece of decor or a mirror from one room to another changes everything. I highly recommend shopping your own stuff before buying anything, especially if you’re doing your refresh on a serious budget.
Play with your space but don’t force it
I’ve found that a lot of the time, outside of my job, the reason I want to refresh a space to begin with is because I forced it the first time. Maybe I settled on something I didn’t absolutely love or just got impatient so decided it was good enough. Don’t do this!! Be patient! Even if it means living in an undecorated space for a while. It’s worth it for the end product to be a space you really love spending time in!
I hope these tips and ideas are helpful for you guys, and remember that you don’t have to spend a ton to make a space feel brand new!
